I held a Princess Party with the help of Baking Mad . They do a one stop party shop where you can choose from a range of party themes - Superheroes, Peter Rabbit, Unicorn, Pirate and Princess.
The kits come with all the ingredients ( except for eggs and butter) to make your chosen cake
I was also sent some of the extra items that you can have to compliment your Princess party and these were Cake Plates, Napkins, Crowns, Party Bags and a stunning Princess Castle centrepiece which was amazing!! All the girls were playing with it!

Included in the Baking Kit are step by step instructions on how to make your centrepiece - So Molly and I got to work in the kitchen to make it!

Of course dressing up as a Princess whilst you are making the cake is optional!

Once the cake was baked and cooled then we got on with the decorations for it - Now I love to bake but I stay clear of fondant icing as I can't seem to get it to work ! I think it's mainly because I am too impatient and not at all neat - so this was a real challenge for me - I roped in the help of Molly and Henry and we got to work!

So that was the cake made ! Then we just had to wait for the guests! We had 9 mums and 12 children over and the majority of them dressed up! I was so pleased! Any excuse to dress as a Princess! The kids played pass the parcel and a few rounds of musical statues and then we had the Cake and the Cupcakes.

Overall I would say that these baking kits are a great idea - almost everything is included - I would have liked the eggs and butter to be included as well and maybe a selection of different styles that you could make for the cake so that you could choose an easy or more challenging version.

With thanks to TalkToMums and Baking Mad for the opportunity to test these products and have a fabulous Princess Party!

Last year I won some tickets to go to the Cake and Bake show in Manchester. I went with a friend from my baking group and we had a lovely time wandering round looking at everything. There were some celebrity bakers and we stumbled across a 'Lounge' area where you booked an appointment with a host of Bake Off people that were there so we signed up to see Francis Quinn!! I was very excited and couldn't wait to speak to her ! But we had to think of a baking query to ask as this was the idea behind the meet and greet. Neither of us could think of a question!! Then I randomly thought of this Hello Kitty baking Mould that I had bought ages ago and every time I used it the cakes would be all squished when they came out......
Frances is such a lovely person - we chatted on the sofa for ages and it was like chatting to an old friend! She lives in Market Harborough which is where I grew up so we discussed all the best cake shops in the area and both agreed that the muffins from Hambleton Bakery are the best that there are. She said that she was working with the bakery on a few things Quintessential Jaffa cakes are one of the many things she is working on at the moment which I will check the next time I am there!!Also we both had a mutual love for this fantastic farm shop called Farndon Fields. There is a lovely tea room, lots of local produce grown on the farm, fantastic butchers , beautiful flowers and pretty gifts. I always pop in when I go back to see mum - they have the best new potatoes, strawberries and asparagus that I have ever tasted and am happy to pay a little more... however I digress...
There were no awkward silences talking to Frances! She showed us her notebook that she uses when she is working on her projects - she is so talented, I loved all her sketches. After a good 20 mins chat she asked us our baking dilema! And I explained about the cake moulds - she told me to grease them well and when the cakes were cooked to put the whole thing in the fridge or even the freezer to cool, something I hadn't thought of, I am not the most patient of bakers and tried to get the cakes out as soon as they came out of the oven! Big Rookie mistake! Our lovely chat came to a close and we had to have some photos.....
So I entered to try the Pampers Baby Dry nappies and was lucky to have been chosen to try them out or rather Henry was trying them.
I normally buy the cheapest nappies that are about and this is usually a supermarkets own brand so it was great to try something that I don't normally use.

So what did I think? To be honest I was very impressed. Firstly they are a lot slimmer and less bulky than other nappies I have used so putting trousers over them was a lot easier! They also feel really soft so they feel nice against your little ones derriere!. Finally they were great for nights . They kept Henry dry all night long and didn't leak which is a bonus!

Overall I was really pleased with them and shall be using them as my first choice now. Thanks to SuperSavyme for the opportunity to try them.
The bake off as we know it is coming to an end. I am very sad as I love the bake off - it works perfectly with Paul and Mary and cheeky Mel and Sue. Not sure what the new version will be like next year but I am sure that I will watch it!

This year I decided to have a go at a few of the technical challenges and some of the bakes..... It was hard work doing this each week so I missed a few of them! I also joined in with the Twitter peeps which was fun as there were some lovely comments.. I am starting to get the hang of this Twitter thing !

So for the first challenge I made some Jaffa cakes. They looked simple to make and they were and I would probably make them again and this time try to make them neater!

It was a bit fiddly getting the chocolate on and the kitchen looked a nightmare!
Another challenge was a Drizzle cake - one of my favourites and I decided to have a go using my Bundt tin and I was really pleased how it came out...

This was a classic Lemon Drizzle cake - my favourite!

Next it was Viennese whirls - again something I hadn't done before. I had some help from Molly on this one...

In Hindsight I realised that I made these too large! They tasted lovely but were very rich you could only eat one!!

The next challenge was Gingerbread houses and I didn't have time to make these! So I made some Gingerbread cupcakes with lemon icing sprinkled with mini gingerbread men.

Ok that is different! I thought she would like a Princess or Frozen party ! Those are her 2 main loves at the moment but she decided on Flamingos after seeing them at the Zoo over the summer.

So I went into overdrive mode and scoured pinterest and Google for ideas and surprisingly there are lots of 4 year olds having Flamingo parties!

I bought Flamingo napkins and straws and then made some Flamingo bunting and Flamingo Cake. We also had a few inflatable flamingos around the room. We played pin the tail on the Flamingo! Flamingo musical statues and the good old Pass the Parcel which I always find quite stressful remembering who has had a go and making sure no one is left out!! This time I was prepared! Every time a child took off a layer I gave them a sticker (flamingo of course!) Genius! worked a treat, I also used this technique for other games and they were all covered in stickers by the end of the party!.

I like any excuse to make bunting as I find it so satisfying! I made lots of it but forgot to take a photo of it strung up..

The best bit for me was getting Molly involved in making the party bags. I took the idea off of Pinterest and used a pink cupcake case and then painted pink on for the rest of the Flamingo. Molly loved it and we were a proper production line as we made 17 of them! Across the middle I wrote the name of each child .
And finally the cake!!! Now I thought this was going to be easy..... It sort of looks like a Flamingo... Molly was thrilled with it so that is all that matters!
Molly had a lovely time with all her friends and some really thoughtful presents so of course we had to make thank you Flamingo cards.... Again Molly loved helping with her handprint! So pleased how they turned out....
I was so excited as I really loved the Winter show so had been entering all the competitions I could find to get tickets!
I went with a friend on a Friday this time - Stephen took the day off and looked after the monkeys!! We got there early-ish which was great as it can get so busy that you can't get to the stalls that you want to. I did a bit of research before hand this time on Twitter to see which companies would be there. The bargains I got from the Winter Show were fabulous.

I wanted to get a bottle of gin ( I know my priorities!) and was looking forward to sampling a few of the Gin stalls - I had in my mind a Damson or Rhubarb gin but when I tried this little beauty I just knew I had to have it!

It is similar to Pimms but not as sweet - it is infused with Earl Grey Tea, borage, lemon verbena and other botanicals. sounds odd but oh it is delicious - served with lots of ice and lemonade.

The only other item I was specifically looking for was something called Brownie Butter.I had seen a lot of coverage about it on Twitter and was very curious Eventually after looking at the guide a million times and not seeing the stand we found it - It is made by a company called Gower Cottage Brownies It is a business run by Kate who has sold hundreds of Brownies from her place in Wales. The Brownie Butter didn't fail to disappoint! It is heaven I could (and did) eat it straight from the jar. It didn't last long! We had friends to stay and used it on vanilla ice cream - everyone agreed it was delicious - glad I only bought the one jar!!!!

One of the things I love most about the Good Food Show is stumbling across something delicious! This is one of those very things - Tortilla mix! Sounds odd but it was yummy. I love a Spanish Omelette and frequently buy the ones that are ready made as proper Tortillas take a long time to cook - all the potatoes and onions cooked in olive oil on a slow heat so that they caramelise does take a while. There is a small business called Zantiago who have slowcooked the onions and potatoes for you so all you have to do is add the eggs! Easy peasy. I cooked this for my 3 year old and 1 year old and they loved it! Unfortunately you can currently only get these in a handful of places in London but they are looking to sells in Delis around the UK.

The other item that I tried but didn't buy at the show but have subsequently is this delicious Ice Cream from a company called Oppo

There are 3 flavours - Salted Caramel with a hint of Lucuma, Madagasca with a hint of Baobab and Mint Choc Swirl with a hint of Spirulina. I tried the Vanilla one at the show and was amazed at how delicious it was and the whole tub only has 82 calories in! They are sugar free ice creams with only natural ingredients to make them taste so sweet. The Salted caramel is absolutely delicious and has a Maple syrup taste to it the exotic sounding Lucuma is from Peru and is shaped like a melon with golden flesh and a big stone inside. In The Vanilla is has Baobab which is an African plant the pulp is sweet and has a slight tang and according to their website is somewhere between a caramelised pear and a grapefruit! Finally in the Mint choc ice cream is the weirdly named Spirulina! This is a leaf from the South China Sea and provides the deep green colour to the ice cream. I am looking forward to trying this one next - I am sure it will be as delicious as the others.

Finally as we left the Good Food Show there was a Goody Bag with all of these delicious things inside! What a treat!!!!

Overall it was a fantastic day and we didn't even get a chance to visit the BBC Gardeners World show that was in the other hall! Would have liked to have a 2 day ticket to come back again!!! And we didn't watch any of the Chefs in the Super-theatre perhaps I will do next time!!

Really looking forward to the Winter Show now! There is so much to see and EAT!

I am so slow at blogging! These biscuits are from a couple of months ago - as some of you are aware I belong to a baking group which I love - it is a group of amateur bakers and we meet once a month. Each month has a theme and we are all encouraged to bring a bake sweet or savoury on that theme. Aprils' theme (yes long ago! have been to 2 since then!!) was Best of British I thought long and hard and decided to make Bourbon Biscuits and Custard Creams. I always tend to do a sweet bake ! We also try and make something at each meeting and we made scones. I do love a scone and I don't tend to make them but I had forgotten how delicious they were and have vowed to make some more!

At the time of this event we had moved out of our flat and were renting a friends house for a few weeks whilst we waited to move into our 'Forever Home' which meant that all of my cookbooks were in storage!!!! This was an absolute nightmare for me as I love my books and hate to be parted from them ( we also didn't have a dishwasher which was another crisis! Washing up!!! ) So that meant that I had to use the good old internet for a recipe.

I decided to use a recipe from a blog as this gives you more of an idea on how to make them and they tend to let you know of any tips and hints. So the recipe I chose for the Bourbons is from Choclette who blogs at Tin and Thyme I am a regular reader of hers and it was lovely to be able to use one of her recipes. In her recipe she adds A Wee Dram to them but I didn't have any alcohol so mine were plain! I also didn't have a special cookie cutter so had to do hearts

They were easy to make thankfully as I was on a bare minimum mixer/utensil mission as it was all in storage! I didn't realise that Golden Syrup was used in these so had to buy some and it came in this lovely commemerative tin which was an added bonus.

I made a lot of them as there are a lot of people at the baking club and they all like to try everything! I had to do them in batches as there were so many of them and burnt some of them as I wasn't used to the oven!

The custard creams came from Nigellas blog They were also incredibly easy to make and again I didn't have the correct cutter so they became hearts too.
Both of the biscuits were British to the core using Golden Syrup and Birds Custard.
They tasted delicious and were eaten by the group with glee . I didn't realise just how easy they were to make and I have put the cookie stamps on my Christmas List so that I can make some more.
I have been slightly put off by the price of the tins but I was very lucky to have won a Bake Box which is a box full of everything you need to make some delicious cakes , in the box was a silicon Bundt dish!!! I was so excited to have won a competition and then to have a Bundt dish in it - well I was over the moon! All the things in the bake box are amazing and the recipes are all things that I have wanted to make but always looked a little too daunting. The recipes are easy to follow and include the specialised equipment that you would need.
So first off it was the Bundt Cake!!!

The recipe was an easy one - my big concern was how was it going to come out of the mould without breaking!!!

But I followed the recipe to the letter and it said to oil the mould and to leave the cake to cool for 30 minutes before you turn it out and look ! It worked!!! was sooooooo pleased with myself and delighted at how it turned out - I love it! I decorated it with a white chocolate icing and some pomegranate seeds.

No stopping me now... going to look for another Bundt recipe!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02617993420362352620noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5285179133374505377.post-33083685219404105382016-03-09T12:23:00.001+00:002016-03-09T12:23:33.800+00:00Rolo Chocolate Brownies

Oh I do love a brownie - the squidgier the better!I have yet to replicate the perfect salted caramel brownie that I had from a local bakery here in Leamington called Haddie and Trilby.
For Valentines day I thought I would have a go at a romantic Rolo Brownie - one of my favourite bloggers is Holly Bell one of the GBBO contestants and in her blog she is always doing a special take on Brownies - Mars Bar Brownies , Oreo Peanut Butter Brownies , Double Decker Brownies, PBJ brownies and a festive one Mince Pie Brownies so that made me think that I should have a go with one of my favourite and romantic chocolates... The Rolo. I used a tried and tested recipe for Brownies from Rachel Allen and just added Rolos.....
They turned out delicious - lovely and goey with a chocolate overload!! I will make these again.

I used 3 tubes of Rolos..... Doesn't look like a lot in the bowl.... I may have had a couple just to make sure they tasted ok!

Oh these were divine!!!
I made them for Mollys pre-school fundraiser - they were a mixture of my award winning cupcake recipe courtesy of Mary Berry that I found on the Mother and Baby website
( still very excited to have won and still people stop me in the street to say they have seen me in the paper!) and the Nutella icing was from one of my favourite blogs Holly Bell - Recipes from a normal mum

Another successful meal planning week! I have signed up for the free month delivery saver from Tesco and I love it - I try to be ahead of myself and plan meals but I am normally sat on a Friday Night only just deciding to do an online shop and the delivery charges can be £6 for next day ( which is always when I need it !) for me that is a lot so this saver is great as you only pay a monthly fee and with the option I have chosen you can order anytime and its free. Love it!! I will continue with it after my free trial as shopping with these 2 monkeys is still annoying!

Back to meals! Last week the Smoked haddock and mushroom pie was my favourite and I forgot to do the Piri Piri prawns so make sneak these in at the weekend. As it was valentines weekend we ate a lot so trying to do a healthy one this week and all my recipes are from this months Weight Watchers magazine.

Monday - Chestnut mushroom and chickpea curry.

Tuesday - Baked Cod with a red pesto crush, New potatoes and green beans

Wednesday - Roasted Mushroom Pasta

Thursday - Ginger Salmon with spicy dhal

Friday - Sausage and lentil braise.

Its making me hungry already....

I love getting any food parcels but it is always exciting to get one from a country I am not really familiar with.
My Pen Pal Greta sent these lovely things .....

There were some lovely items - there wasn't anything that I didn't really like....

Aha - No not the Norweigian pop band! When I first opened these I expected them to be cheesy like our version of Wotsits but they aren't they are a sweet version of Wotsits - The children love them!

I love that Greta has sent a cake mix what a clever idea! I might send one in my next foodie box! - I haven't made this yet but really looking forward to having a go.

Some lovely sachets of herbs that Greta says are lovely for soups and some fruit bars which were delicious a bit fudgy but have no idea what were in them!

I thought the children would like these as they are rice cakes and they love them normally but neither were keen - they had a yoghurt coating on in fruit flavours I liked them so I have eaten them... all!

These 2 packets were the best of the parcel - the yellow ones look like shreddies but tasted like custard creams - they vanished in hours! The Karuna were some lovely squidgy chocolates and also vanished fast.

Finally some cheese! I haven't had cheese in a parcel before and this was a lovely treat - tasted a bit like a very creamy version of parmesan if that makes sense!

Overall one of the best food parcels I have had yet! But I say that every time!! Next months parcel is coming from Germany! Can't wait!
Homemade Granola is the best and so easy to make and best of all you can add whatever you like to it. I have been put off from making granola as I thought it was a time consuming waste of time - how wrong I was!! There are lots of recipes these days but I adapted a recipe from Rachel Allen - Home Cooking - Crunchy Granola - I followed the principles of what to use but changed most of the ingredients and halved it as I was making it for presents.

Makes about 750g
You can double the quantities for a larger batch.

75g Butter
75ml Honey
1tsp Vanilla extract
150g Rolled Oats
75g Pecan nuts - roughly chopped
25g Almonds- roughly chopped
75g mixture of sunflower and pumpkin seeds
50g Desiccated coconut
150g Mixed dried fruit - I used Sultanas and dried cranberries

Preheat the oven to 170C ( 325F) Gas mark 3

Place the butter , honey and vanilla in a small pan and heat gently until melted.
Mix the oats, nuts, seeds and coconut in a separate boll. Pour over the melted butter and honey mixture. Stir well making sure that all the oats are covered in the honey/butter mixture.
Pour the oat mixture on a baking tray and place in the over for 20 mins making sure you toss the mixture with a spoon every 5 mins so that it is all toasted.
Remove from the oven and leave to cool on the tray stirring every now and then.
Once cool transfer to a large bowl and add your mixed fruit. Pour into an airtight container and store for up to 2 months.
Well last weeks meal plan didn't work very well at all! It just takes one thing to break the routine and it all falls apart! I was feeling lousy coming down with a cold for a few days so just made really easy pasta and sauce meals and had a cheeky takeaway one night so this weeks meals look slightly similar to last week! I am taking it easy and not being too adventurous! Will try better next week!

Monday - Nutty Green Roast ( from last week! and from Fay Ripley cookbook)

Tuesday - Spaghetti Bol ( meat version for me and Veggie for Stephen)

Wednesday - Risotto (with what ever vegetables that need using up)

Thursday - Salmon and Leek lasagne ( again from last week really looking forward to this!)

Friday - Quorn Pasties (based on a weight watchers recipe)

So that is my week - I still feel a bit pathetic but hoping to come back fighting fit next week and maybe do a little baking!!

If you would like to join in or would like to have a look at what people are eating this week have a look here .
Last weeks meals were fab - all went to plan but not necessarily on the days that I planned them. The Mexican Bean Lasagne was delicious and I used some of the ratatouille that I had made the day before in it as well. I did one online shop and only visited a supermarket once to get milk - result!! I am terrible for just popping in for a pint of milk and then £20 later.....
This week I am using some recipes from Fay Ripleys cookbook - Fay Makes it Easy

This is a fab book with lovely easy family friendly meals and there are a lot of vegetarian and meals that can be easily adapted to be vegetarian. I have chosen 3 meals from her book this week.

Monday - Pasta with prawns in tomato sauce.
Tuesday - Salmon and Leek lasagne ( from Fays book.)
Wednesday - Baked Bubble and Squeak - (Fays book)
Thursday - some sort of risotto with veg from the bottom of the fridge!!
Friday - Nutty Green Roast Veg ( from Fays book)

For the weekends I normally just 'wing it' - Saturday Stephen cooked a curry! Fab- he even went and bought all the ingredients. He didn't look in the cupboard before he went so we have a few duplicates of spices but I didn't have to cook so I am not bothered!

I have joined in with At Home with Mrs M and if you would like to join or have a nosy to see what people are having this week have a look here.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02617993420362352620noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5285179133374505377.post-17682999375739711902016-01-16T10:52:00.001+00:002016-01-16T10:52:48.689+00:00Disaster with Silicone moulds!!I promised myself that I wouldn't make a lot of sweet things this month as I may have overdosed on sugar and puddings in the last few months! But I couldn't stop myself the other day saying that I would bring some cakes to a playdate that Molly was invited to. My reasoning behind this is that I can bake and then share the goodies so that I don't eat them all. So I decided to make some cakes using my new Hello Kitty mould that I bought ages ago

- I had heard that getting the cakes out was a problem so I did my research and sprayed with oil, let them cool in the mould upside down so they would come out and this is the result.....

oops not good! So having spent the afternoon making these I only had a limited amount of time to make something else - shortbread - easy and quick. I found this Nigella Vanilla shortbread recipe that is in her Forever Summer book - they are easy peasy instead of putting them in a tin like Nigella does I made heart shapes out of them.
I feel Its about time I got a bit organised! So new week and new me - I've planned this weeks meals with my faithful Weight Watchers - The Complete Kitchen cookbook. It is currently £6.99 at the Bookpeople at the moment.

Of all the Weight Watchers books I have ( there are a few!!) this one is my favourite - It is a lovely hardback book with good quality pages ( this is important to me!) and really nice pictures and the recipes are lovely There are 9 chapters covering all meals of the day including - Weekend Suppers, The modern Vegetarian and Sweet Endings. They are easy meals to make with simple ingredients you have already in stock all with a healthy angle. So here is my weeks plan....

Monday - Ratatouille with Smoked Trout

Tuesday - Potato and Pea samosas with salad and New Potatos

Wednesday - Quorn and Leek Pie with mash

Thursday - Quorn Pasties with roasted veg

Friday - Mexican Bean Lasagne

And somewhere in there I shall sneak a sponge pudding in! There is a lovely easy microwaveable one in the Kitchen cookbook that only takes a few minutes. Its back to healthy eating for me....

I have joined in with At Home with Mrs M and her meal planning monday - if you would like to see what everyone is having click here Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02617993420362352620noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5285179133374505377.post-60503070706935091502016-01-06T10:50:00.002+00:002016-01-06T10:50:35.878+00:00Puff Pastry Christmas TreeI love the mini videos that people have been posting about food - especially the speeded up ones ! This is from one of those that was posted on my Facebook page recently - Easy peasy no measuring and takes minutes to make and looks fantastic.

Basically it is a sheet of puff pastry - I spread over some sundried tomato and parmesan cheese - added another sheet of puff pastry - marked the shape of a Christmas Tree - covered with egg wash and put in the oven!
Simples!
It was delicious - you can vary the filling , Pesto, different types of cheese or Nutella to name but a few. I took it to a friends party and had lots of lovely comments. I love it when you can make something easy and looks fantastic..Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02617993420362352620noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5285179133374505377.post-82316773683255818022015-12-30T14:45:00.001+00:002015-12-30T14:45:32.379+00:00Good Food Show - WinterThis is a delayed post from earlier in December.... As usual time runs away with me!

I was really lucky and won a couple of tickets to the good food show in Birmingham - I love this show , I went a couple of years ago with a very little Molly (she was only a few months old) and it was a lovely day out - eating lots and buying new foods trying to get a pushchair through lots of people was a bit of a pain - so this year I went on my own! Stephen had the day with Molly and Henry and I got the train ( very exciting time to myself!!) and met up with a friend . It was how I remembered it from before - very busy! I tried more foods this time and came home with a big bag of goodies...
I also entered a couple of competitions as I was feeling lucky after winning the tickets to the show and this silly pose below won me a Goody Bag from Stoves which included a lovely apron, festive cookie cutters and a signed cookery book from Phil Vickery ! So it pays to enter competitions and look the fool!

All packaged and ready to go....

Here is the recipe - I will hopefully participate again next year...

Cranberry, Winter Spice, Caramac and Pecan cookies.....

Makes 25

125g soft butter
150g soft brown sugar
1 medium egg, lightly beaten
150g plain flour
half a teaspoon baking powder
75g rolled porridge oats
1 tsp Waitrose signature spice
75g peacans chopped
125g cranberries
100g Caramac chocolate chopped

1) Preheat the oven to 180C, fan 160C, gas 4 - line 3 baking tins with baking paper.
2) Cream together the butter and sugar until very light and fluffy this can take up to 5 minutes with an electric hand mixer. Add the egg and continue to mix until incorporated and a smooth mixture.
3) In a seperate bowl , weigh out the flour, baking powder, oats, Winter spice and pecans. Fold thee dry ingredients into the butter mixture.
Finally fold in he chocolate and the cranberries.
4) This is optional but if ou want to ensure that all of the cookies come out the same size weigh the dough and then divide by 25 - it should work out to be about 30g each - if you don't want to weigh then roll the dough into a walnut shaped size.
5) Space the balls of cookie dough about 5 cm apart on your lined trays. Press each cookie ball gently so that you level the surface of them a little.
6) bake for 10-12 mins. Your cookies should be starting to go golden round the edges- they may feel a little soft but will firm up when cooled.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02617993420362352620noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5285179133374505377.post-56782039531051519712015-12-02T10:08:00.004+00:002015-12-02T10:09:26.859+00:00Masterchef Judge - John TarodeAnother day and another celebrity cook! This time I went to see John Torode. To be honest I wasn't really a huge fan of Johns - nothing against him at all in fact all that I knew of him before was that he is a judge on Masterchef! The venue for his cookery presentation was a department store in Coventry called Leekes again somewhere that I hadn't heard of before - it was in a strange location a department store just off of a roundabout all on its own!

Inside there is a Neff kitchen all ready for cookery demonstrations!

I met up with some members of the Baking club that I belong to which is always fun as they are a real laugh! We had good seats and sat down to watch with a glass of cava which was a lovely way to start!
John arrived very chirpy and bouncy and cooked 3 dishes - Curry Cutlets with chickpeas and potatoes, Passion Fruit Pudding and Fancy French Toast. we were given a recipe leaflet of 2 of them but they can also be found in his cookbook.

The food he cooked was available to taste at the end of the demonstration and I hung about until the end so only had a small sample to try - unfortunately the Curry Cutlets had been devoured but there was a lot of chickpeas and potatoes which tasted divine and I am definitely going to attempt this recipe. The Passion Fruit Sponge was good and I have made a similar lemon sponge before - again another one to add to my list of things to make. I didn't try the French Toast as it had the dreaded bananas in it! ( not a fan of bananas!) but it looked tasty.

His book is full of food that as the name suggests is His Kind of Food that he likes to cook for his friends and family - to be honest I was a bit surprised as I was used to seeing him judging on Masterchef so presumed that the recipes would all be complicated and using hard to find ingredients but the book has some lovely recipes in - I did buy a copy and got it signed.
Overall it was a lovely way to spend the afternoon - John is a very funny man and gives you lots of interesting facts for example I didn't know that to make a Victoria Sponge you weigh the eggs and then use the same weight for eggs, butter and flour..... His book is full of tasty recipes and is currently a bargain on Amazon
The only specification I really had was of course shortbread as my parcel was from Scotland and Dawn didn't dissapoint!( I wonder if she gets fed up of sending Shortbread to everyone?) I opened the little round ones as soon as I had taken the photo and they were divine - melt in your mouth little morsels, the packet in the middle was peanut butter truffles and Dawn said she had some as well and as they were so delicious was contemplating keeping them - I am so glad she didn't they were delicious - lovely and rich , one was just enough for me - they have all mysteriously disappeared now....
The museli oatcakes were gorgeous - I ate them as they were and didn't feel the need to add anything to them as I would a normal oatcake. They weren't as sweet as a normal biscuit but still as tasty.
The chocolate had nuts in and was really yummy - I haven't had the olives yet.
Richard did a demonstation of a bread called ChallahRolls which I haven't heard of before - it is a typical Jewish bread made from an enriched dough. Richard made the dough and then we all had a go at twirling it into a rose type effect - He of course made it look so easy
Whilst the bread was in the oven Richard talked to us about his time on GBBO , he said that all the contestants on that series are really good friends and see each other all the time and he is hosting a xmas party for them all this year. It sounds like they had a lot of fun filming on and off the camera!

We also had a mini bake off - we all had to bring in a bake of Buns. I could only think of Chelsea buns and I haven't made those before but I am always up for a challenge! So I found a recipe online and adapted it a little as I only had dates and walnuts and covered it with mini gingerbread men.It took nearly all day to make - lots of proving and in between all of this I was entertaining a 3 year old and 1 year old! I was really pleased with my finished bake .
